Eligibility Checklist

Eligible applications for the American Legion Post 245 Vic Schiavone Memorial Scholarship must meet the following Criteria:

 

  1. Applicant is the child, grandchild or spouse of a current, retired or deceased Veteran.

 

“Spouse” is defined as a U.S. citizen that is lawfully married to the sponsor Veteran. No other non-marital unions will be considered, regardless of whether the couple shared children.

 

“Widow(er)” An un-remarried spouse of a deceased Veteran.

 

“Children/Grandchildren” are:

  • biological offspring to the sponsor Veteran
  • related by marriage i.e. step children
  • legally adopted by the sponsor Veteran.

 

“Veteran” means:

  • Currently serving Active duty
  • Retired military, reservists & National Guard
  • Former active Duty Military Service Member released and discharged under conditions other that Dishonorable.

Military Service includes U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard or their reserve and National Guard Components.  

 

 

  1. Annual award: $500.00. Applications shall be submitted NLT 1 May for the following School Year. Awards will be made payable to the institution for 1 academic year. Student must submit an new application for each academic year.

 

  1. Selection Criteria:

Applicants shall submit an application which will be reviewed by the scholarship committee comprised of American Legion Post 245 members. Applicants will be notified by mail or email and awards will be announced on or before 1 June each year and presented to the individual at the next regular Post 245 meeting of the legion. Selection criteria will be based on scholastic achievement, financial need, volunteerism and Community Service. Children/Grandchildren and widows of Veterans who died in the line of duty or suffered a debilitating injury in the line of duty may be given priority over others in the selection process.
